Coach Responsibilities

Coach Responsibilities

Beginning of the Season:

  • Complete concussion training and EPYSA risk management application every year
  • Submit background clearances to SRA once every 5 years
  • Consider having a team manager volunteer to help with admin duties during the season
  • You will receive a referee check in late August from SRA and will be responsible to bring the cash to games for the referee fees (this is only for fall season, spring is done differently)
  • Find your game schedule on your league’s website and communicate to parents
  • Update TeamSnap: Enter practice schedule and game schedule on TeamSnap in calendar (most directions to fields can be found on opponent’s website or preloaded in TeamSnap)
  • Communicate to players all games and practices (via TeamSnap)
  • Ensure all players have uniforms ordered and have no duplicate numbers (This is generally done in spring after tryouts)
  • Coaches will receive an official roster and players’ and coaches’ cards from the Registrar in late August. (If you add an assistant coach, they will need to get a card and complete concussion training and clearances)

In the Week Prior to the game:

  • Confirm date/time/location/directions with opposing team
  • Confirm Uniform colors with opposing team and communicate to team
  • Make sure players are updating TeamSnap with game (and practice) availability
  • Assign snack responsibilities and communicate to team using TeamSnap

Game Day:

  • Print copies of roster for the opposing team and referee
  • Bring player passes and coach passes to game
  • Bring money for referee (Each team is responsible for half of the fee)
  • Home team provides at least one game ball (two or three recommended)
  • Home team makes sure field is ready for game (lined, nets, flags)
  • Confirm score with opposing team after game
  • Enter score on league website (within 24 hours recommended) (see below for instructions)
  • If yours is the final game, ensure the field is cleaned up, flags put away, nets inspected. Let your commissioner know of any repairs, missing equipment, field condition, etc.

In the event of bad weather:

  • Unless league or Club has cancelled game, report to your game as scheduled. Soccer is an ALL WEATHER SPORT. If you are concerned, contact the Executive Director or your league delegate as early as possible to discuss possible cancellation.
  • Coaches should not unilaterally cancel games! The home and visiting coaches and the referee must all agree that the field is unplayable. Each team will have to contact their league delegates to make arrangements for official cancellation and rescheduling.  Teams that do not follow this will be responsible for full referee fees and possible fines.

If referee does not show up for scheduled game:

  • Select mutually acceptable person from spectators at game (payment optional)
  • Report score same as above
  • Report to league delegate with the game #

Other important info for coaches:

  • Per SRA’s Travel Soccer General Policies- “U9, U10, U11, and U12 players must play at least 50% of game time, including tournaments and friendlies.  SSC recommends that playing time be equal for all younger players. For U13 and older teams, players must play a minimum of 33% of game time, including tournaments and friendlies.”
