Hoops has arrived!

Nether-Swarthmore Hoops registration opens tomorrow, October 20th,  at 9:00AM.  Please read all of the following information if you are interested in registering your child.

WHO PLAYS HOOPS?

Your child does!  Nether-Swarthmore Hoops offers basketball for girls and boys in kindergarten through twelfth grade.  Developmental basketball offers clinic-style instruction with in-session scrimmages for kids in kindergarten and first grade.  Second- and third-graders play in Junior Hoops, with seven regular season games but no play-off eligibility.  For grades 4-12, Nether-Swarthmore Hoops offers championship-style league play in the following grade groups: 4/5 Girls, 4/5 Boys, 6+ Girls, 6/7 Boys, 8/9 Boys, 10-12 Boys.  If there is sufficient interest in an older girls’ league, we will gladly support one.  Please sign your daughters up in the 6+ division, and we will evaluate how many players we have.  Note that all groups are based on grade, not age.  Travel basketball is available for those in grades 3-12.

WHO COACHES HOOPS?

You do!  Parent volunteers are a major part of all Nether-Swarthmore Hoops programming.  Grades 2-12 are coached by a parent head coach and a parent assistant coach.  Developmental Hoops is coached by Sports Mentors (middle- and high-school kids) with the supervision of parent volunteers.  Coaching for the first time can be intimidating, but we are here to help.  We have a Director of Coaching who sends skills and drills for each week of the regular season straight to your inbox.  We also have a Hoops Ombudsman who can help with any non-coaching questions or concerns you may have.

WANNA KICK THE SEASON OFF RIGHT?

We’re offering Town & Gown basketball clinics THIS SATURDAY with some very impressive local collegiate basketball stars.  We still have space in both the grades 3-5 session and the grades 6-8 session.  Come learn from the stars!

WE NEED MORE HELP

We need help to make this season run.  We already have a wonderful group of volunteers, but we still need more.  Specifically, we need a Director of Travel Basketball and a Director of Developmental Basketball.  Directors help set up the season and make sure everything runs smoothly.  We also need commissioners for the following age groups: Boys’ 2/3 and Boys’ 8/9.  Commissioners help run evaluations and the team selection process.  The job tends to be very busy for about two weeks and then not nearly as busy for the remainder of the season.

You can volunteer to coach (as head or assistant coach) when you register your child.  You can also volunteer to be a commissioner or director there or by emailing Sara Kelly at Sara@SwarthmoreRecreation.org.

EVALUATIONS FOR HOOPS

Evaluations are offered for those in grades 4-12 and for travel basketball.  Evaluations are only to help us create balanced teams.  Players of all ability levels are welcome at Nether-Swarthmore Hoops.  This year, evaluations will be held over the course of one week in the SRS gym.  Here’s the anticipated schedule:

Monday, November 15: Boys 4/5 (5:30-6:30); Girls 4/5 (6:30-7:30)

Tuesday, November 16: Boys 6/7 (5:30-6:30); Girls 6+ (6:30-7:30)

Wednesday, November 17: Make up sessions (Girls 5:30-6:30, Boys 6:30-7:30)

Thursday, November 18: Boys 8/9 (5:30-6:30); Boys 10-12 (6:30-7:30)

Friday, November 19: Boys travel (5:30-6:30); Girls travel (6:30-7:30)

**All times are subject to change.**

WHAT ABOUT COVID?

Hoops follows the SRA safety plan with two additional requirements.  First, all those who are not actively playing must be masked.  This includes players, coaches, and spectators.  Second, players must be separated by six feet when they’re not on the court.  To help make sure we’re following these requirements, we are asking each family to take a turn as the Parent Safety Monitor.  You’ll be able to choose your week in TeamSnap once the teams are set.

REGISTRATION DETAILS

Registration opens tomorrow at 9:00AM.  We will be opening a fairly limited number of spots and then asking people to sign up for a waitlist.  When we have enough coaches and assistant coaches to run the program, will we open up spots for those on the waitlist.  Our goal is to allow everyone on the waitlist to play.  You can ensure your child’s spot and the success of the program by signing up to coach.

At the time of registration, you may choose up to one weekday when your child is not available for practice.  We will do our best to honor those requests, but, other than siblings, we cannot honor any requests for children play on the same team.

A WORD ABOUT CHANGE

Because of the late notice about gym rentals, we are rushing to get out schedules and open registration.  We do not yet know exactly when we will be able to rent the gyms, so things like tryout schedules may change.  We cannot give you an accurate guess about when different teams will practice because we do not have enough information to begin setting the schedule.  We will do the best we can to make schedules work, and if things change, we’ll do our best to keep you informed.  Thank you for all of you who held out for Nether-Swarthmore Hoops.

This will be a season worth waiting for.

Fall registration is here!

Fall registration opens bright and early tomorrow morning!  Head on over to the SRA website to register for Town Soccer, Petite Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee Clinics, Adult Volleyball, and Women’s Soccer.  Registration opens tomorrow, Monday, August 2, at 9:00AM.  (Men’s Soccer will open next Monday, August 9, at 9:00AM.)

Registration also opens tomorrow for our Hometown Harvest!  Do you grow the biggest squash on the street?  Are your geraniums the brightest on the block? Do your peppers make your neighbors green with envy?  Come show off your bounty at the Hometown Harvest at the Farmers’ Market! Vendors from the market will judge all fruit, vegetables, and floral arrangements. Enter for a chance to win Best in Show and a gift certificate to the Farmers’ Market. Enter a single item for $5 or unlimited items for $10. Entries should be brought to the market the morning of the event, but you do not need to be present to win. All produce submissions will be donated to a local food pantry and all arrangements will be donated to a local senior center. We hope to see you there!

This year, we are capping program registration early to allow us time to organize coaches. To help SRA grow and to ensure that your favorite programming is available, please click on the “I’d like to volunteer” box in your registration.  We will admit as many participants as space and volunteers allows.  If you’re put on the waitlist, look for an email asking you to complete your registration.  We’ll send those out as fast as coaches sign up to help out.

We are always looking for volunteers!  Do you have a few hours you can give SRA?  Email Sara Kelly at Sara@SwarthmoreRecreation.org and find out how you can help SRA.  There’s also lots of information on our website about the different positions in the organization.

Do you have a teen who’s ready to help out?  We have many positions for teenagers at SRA, from helping teach our youngest soccer stars to setting up and breaking down events.  Have your teen sign up to be included on our email list.  Signing up doesn’t commit you to anything, but it lets us know you’d like to be notified when we’re looking for help.

Last but definitely not least, a HUGE thank you to our volunteers!  Thank you to Lauri Cielo, whose expertise in web design has dramatically improved our website; to Billy Lynch, who brings his energy and passion for youth sports to the Town Soccer program; to Jenn Prevoznik McNamara and Rachel Smuts, who are organizing our incredible new event, the Hometown Harvest; to Kim Bernaus, who is helping us design a Petite Soccer curriculum that will be fun and educational; and to Jake Booth and Erin Bronchetti, who are excited to help direct Petite Soccer.  We couldn’t do it without all of you!

SRA SOS

This is an SRA SOS.

The Swarthmore Recreation Association is the heart of this community.  It is the home of the Fourth of July bike race, the Great Swarthmore Campout, and Town Soccer.  It is the home of rec basketball, of bocce, of the town picnic.  SRA is camp.  SRA is horseshoes.  SRA is neighbors coming together week after week for healthy fun.  It is the source of strong friendships and the very lifeblood of this community.

Our community was hurt by 2020, and SRA, at the heart of the community, was wounded, too.  A shuttered year left schedules unmade, cash flowing the wrong direction, and rhythms interrupted.  Most importantly, it left far too many empty seats at the table.  Critical roles at SRA are unfilled, and as we work furiously behind the scenes to breathe life back into the programs that make Wallingford, Swarthmore, Media, and Nether Providence the towns we love, we need your help.

We need board members.  We need basketball commissioners.  We need program directors.  We need you.  We need you to come lend your expertise, your creativity, your love of this community. Young parents, there is a place for you here. Retirees, there is a place for you here. High school students, working moms, soccer stars.  SRA is the heart of this community, and there is a place for all of you here. Join us.

To take your place at the table, email us at sara@swarthmorerecreation.org.  We can’t do it without you.

SRA Town Soccer graduate makes it big!

SRA congratulates former Town Soccer “red team” standout,  Mason Toye, for being selected 7th overall in the 2018 Major League Soccer draft, by the Minnesota United.   Former SRA Coach extraodinaire Mike Carey seems to remember Mason slide tackling at age 6.   It has not been confirmed, but rumor has it Mason credits Town Soccer for all his success.    After his time in Swarthmore, Mason moved to North Jersey, then onto Indiana University where he earned all Big-10 honors.  Well done Mason!   You can learn more about the MLS draft here, and you can see Mason in person when the United visit Talen stadium to meet the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, October 6th.
